Born and raised in New York,
I grew up in the borough of Queens and I am the product of a great public school education. Being a native New Yorker influences my occupations in every way. There is tremendous diversity here and adaptability; inclusion and acceptance.
And like all of you, I connect OT to activity and see everything from an OT lens: From specific coffee preferences to daily bumper to bumper traffic, to learning to drive in the crowded city (IADL), to discovering my love of experiencing new cuisines and music (ADL/IADL).
This city has taught me how to appreciate different cultures and people and all the other cities I've visited. I find real joy in traveling, interacting, laughing, and connecting with others.
My name is Vikram Pagpatan and I am an OTR/L from New York City. My name is Vikram Pagpatan and I am an OTR/L from New York City. Being of South Asian descent (Indian-American) and as a first generation university graduate, establishing pathways and mechanisms of recruitment, mentorship, and retention in higher education, especially for students from disadvantaged and under-represented communities is a powerful passion of mine.
Fluent in 5 languages, my American and Asian cultures are a unique balance and cultural fusion that work very well in many contexts: values, work ethic, habits, my sense of hometown pride, positive outlook, and the sense of civic duty.
I identify as Asian-American (AA) and a daily reminder of who I am, where I've been and where I am headed comes from the values instilled in me by my mother - a truly remarkable woman. The great influencers in my life are my family, friends, community of supporters, and the mentors who illuminate my path through this journey.
In addition to my private clinical practice, I am a full time faculty member and admissions coordinator of the State University of New York Downstate Health Sciences University MSOT program in Brooklyn, New York. In addition to my private clinical practice, I am a full time faculty member and admissions coordinator of the State University of New York Downstate Health Sciences University MSOT program in Brooklyn, New York. I also proudly teach at my alma mater, CUNY York College. My clinical background is in adult and pediatric rehabilitation with a focus on assistive technology practice and acute care practice. I am a strong believer in not allowing inequities of any form to stand in the way of positive sustainable changes through courageous actions.
I am privileged and honored to serve the OTP community and its stakeholders at large as an elected AOTA Board Director and as the immediate Past President of the Association of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in Occupational Therapy (www.aapiot.org), non-profit knowledge based organization committed to educating the public, healthcare practitioners and students on issues impacting the AAPI communities.
These national leadership roles have enabled me to look back and extend a hand of support to the next generation of emerging leaders, acknowledging their potential, their proven skills, talents, and merits for success.
When I'm not teaching or researching the newest trends in automotive technology, I love spending time being a good companion to my dog . I believe the pursuit of meaningful leisure activities is an essential part of a healthy work life balance, especially in the promotion of overall health and wellbeing. I enjoy riding my bike, watching documentaries on Netflix and I am an avid standup comedy fan.
As an American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) Board Director (2022-2025), I advocate for our members' interests nationally and promote the diverse expertise and adaptability of our profession across various health and education sectors.
Vision, purpose, empathy, and accountability are crucial attributes for great leadership. Driving sustainable outcomes that secure the future of our profession demands courage and commitment. These are the principles I subscribe to in my 10 years in roles on executive leadership teams.
As the immediate Past President of the Asian-American & Pacific Islanders in Occupational Therapy (AAPI-OT), my goal was to ensure that all stakeholders in occupational therapy fully recognize and value the essential contributions of Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders. Their pivotal roles as providers and consumers of OT services are known and valued in our field. I encourage you to engage with our mission and support this critical initiative by becoming a member or supporter.
